Greater Manchester, Merseyside and Cheshire Regional Report – June 2010

Hi All,

As I write, the sun is beating down on a gorgeous Sunday. Paul is attending Roar – more of that later – and for the second time this year has been able to drive confidently with the top down!

The June meeting was well attended with welcomes extended to new members Andy Gent and Chris Smith.

At the meeting, amid general approval, Paul suggested that we might reduce the number of raffles held at monthly meetings to 4 per year plus the usual Tatton Park and Annual Dinner raffles. We appreciate that asking you to part with your hard earned cash each month is asking a lot and we proposed the change so that hopefully you will feel able to provide fewer good quality prizes which are worth winning!

The usual voluntary 'car charging' will continue with this money going to our chosen charity. Again, we ask if anyone has a local cause which could benefit from our support, just let us know.

Classic & Performance Car Spectacular – the 5th and 6th of June at Tatton Park

The days leading up to this weekend event were dry and warm and we hoped for the same over the weekend. As we arrived with the 'Club Hospitality Caravan' Andy and Graham were finishing off mowing the pitch. A huge thank you for your sterling effort. It became hotter and hotter as the afternoon progressed so the awning, bunting, chains and flags were quickly erected by our setting up team - Kevin, Jane, Dave and Gail - before the important task of testing the cold beer. Then a welcome shower cooled us down.

Saturday was a hot one! 29 cars were in place by 9:30 am and everyone provided with coffee, tea and bacon sandwiches or 'continental' breakfast. There were only a few campers this year but we enjoyed a feast in the evening. We were pleased to win a 'highly commended' shield too!

Sunday dawned showery and we feared the worst. However, by mid-morning the weather had cleared and although we didn't have the brilliant sunshine of the previous day it was dry and warm. 27 cars were once again in place early.

The raffle raised £240 for Cancer Research UK. Thank you all for your contributions to the raffle, your understanding with the new booking system and your help with clearing up on the Sunday afternoon – we had so many helpers it made our job so much easier! Special thanks to Gail for selling the raffle tickets and to my right hand lady, Jane, for help with breakfast.

Roar – at Moorside Grange, Derbyshire

I went along on the Sunday. What a glorious day. I had a motorway-free route all picked out, or to be accurate, Tim Tim had! To be fair, Tim had done a pretty good job, lots of quiet, country lanes, at least until I got there, some in bright sunshine and some in cool woodland. Idyllic! And then it happened: Tim was wittering about bearing left in 50 yards at just about the time I realised that the red and white cone fairy had other ideas. 'Road Closed'. I carried on and Tim, after muttering about 'turning round when possible, agreed to be more forward looking. A further attempt to reach our shared goal was foiled by more of the fairy's mischief. Tim and I later discovered that we were only half a mile away at that point. Tim seemed unperturbed but I was beginning to feel a lack of composure. I plodded on in the hope that there must be a way while Tim repeatedly urged me to turn around. Turn around! Not likely, I'm going forward. And so we found ourselves in Whaley Bridge. Tim started to make sense again and I regained my composure. Ten minutes later we were at Roar.

What a great day. Trade stands, lots of shiny cars and a Cerbera wearing a spandex jump suit. Oh yes, and a rolling road, but that's another story. Our region did well.

Steve Reddington won the concourse, Paul Taylor won the most cherished TVR, Stuart Naylor won the highest BHP-340 I think, and I was the second loudest with 120 db. (Is that a good thing? Janette) The highest was a Cerbera with 122.5 db
